CROME is a satellite classification of 0.42 ha hexagons. It over-calls maize compared with official Defra crop statistics, so treat the totals as indicative. The classifier changes between years, so some jumps are the method, not the farms: "Temporary grassland" only exists in 2024 (earlier it is inside Grass), and 2018-2021 have one-off spikes such as heathland (2018), lucerne and beans (2020) and perennial crops (2019, 2021).
